EUROPAN 06 - REDEVELOPMENT OF THE RAILWAY/HARBOUR AREA IN THE TOWN OF VARBERG - SWEDEN

The Aim of the proposed scheme is to gain a potentially valuable planning as a model of the "sustainable city". In one relatively concentrated area it contains all the necessary functions of a viable city extension: commerce, residences, public, employment, recreation and leisure time interacting together as an autonomous organism. This study hopes to provide a model where by all these attributes can be coherently organized into a City that is designed for pedestrians as much as it is for automobiles and as sensitive to the needs of natural systems as it is to those of people. The goal is to produce specific design solutions that integrate urban and natural systems tels

Concept

The project’s idea starts by considering the actual proposal site as a generative platform to support the mixed- use program, where circulation and functions become mutually informing, a continuo’s Green floor raised up to form a protected platform for the building’s above to produce underlying spaces where the different needs can be hosted. This idea of the platform as a base container of different Functions achieves distinct spatial qualities; forming a Barrier to the elevated residential and offices area via placing parking under the platform and providing storefront, restaurants, cafés towards the streets, providing inner green zone where bike and pedestrian are more protected from the automobile street. A very strong correlation between the travellers nod, the old town center and the harbour area is enhanced by the direct connection of the inside pedestrian road, running through the platform on two different levels. Arriving to the active train station by walking, a new transition point opens toward the sea where the public Facilities are situated, marked by the empty ending road, like framing void and making nature as a reference to attract people going through the area, ( it’s the concept of leaving Nature always protagonist over Architecture). To strengthen this transition point, the old train station becomes a museum, which could barely catch a glimpse of the see. A complete circulation scheme will be densely used between the different nods. The residence and offices buildings in the proposal area are detached from the platform to create an empty space, this will permit the clear vision towards the see. They float over the platform ending with two towers that strongly will characterize the City creating a new skyline, they will become the visual reference of Varberg, the tow shepherds guarding the city, each one turning to a different direction.
